Question 1: What do you consider the benefits of working in a team?

[SITUATION]I have worked in teams in a variety of situations. [TASK] This includes working as part of team to organise a large event. [ACTION] When working in a team I always seek to understand everyone’s strengths, weaknesses and motivations. I then try to utilise these, whether I am leading the team or a member of it. [RESULT] When utilised effectively, a team brings wider mix of skills, increases individual motivation, allows greater flexibility and improves the likelihood of task success when compared to independent working.

Question 2: Do you prefer working in a team or working independently?

[SITUATION] I have worked in roles where I have worked independently. For example, in my role at _______ I worked largely independently, and at my role at _______ I worked as part of large team. I am able to do both effectively. [TASK] My preference depends upon the task. For example, when I worked on the organisation of a large event, working as part of a team suited the task and my skills in that context. However, when working on data input in my ______ role, I preferred independent working. [ACTION] I will seek to identify how a task is best approached, either as part of a team or independently. This will include considering what skills will be required and if the task requires more than one person to be successful. [RESULT] I have found myself able to successfully achieve tasks in either environment and enjoy both.

Question 3: What attributes do you bring to a team?

[SITUATION] I have worked in a number of roles where I have worked as part of a team. For example, in, _________ and ___________ and including projects such as __________ and __________. [TASK] When joining a team, I consider the strengths in the other team members and how I can best contribute to the team’s objectives. [ACTION] Personally I am very flexible, supportive of others, hard-working, determined and have a range of skills which support a team environment. [RESULT] I have always been considered a valuable team member by my managers and other team members. This has led to be selected to work in teams on specific pieces of work. My contribution to a team has always been full and contributed significantly to the team’s success.

Set the context of your answer. Tell the panel, where, when and why this situation came to be. For example, “Whilst working in my current role, we were holding an event in which 100 plus people were due to attend any minute. That’s when I was notified the caterers weren’t able to make it.”


What did you have to do. For example, “I had to organise alternative caterers and without the guests knowing. The failure of the event would have been a disaster for the company.”


What did you actually do. For example, “I spoke to the venue owner and we identified other caterers who may be able to help at short notice. I contacted all of them and identified one who could cater the event albeit one hour later than planned.”


How did the situation play out. For example, “Catering was provided in line with guest expectations. The evening, after this initial hiccup, went seamlessly. I was congratulated by the senior managers for sorting out what could have been a catastrophe.”

Constructing your answers in this way will ensure you fully address the question / scenario given and the criteria the panel are measuring you against.
