Question 1: How would you go about combining studying for professional qualifications whilst working?
I am clear that one of the main challenges in becoming a qualified quantity surveyor will be balancing delivering in the workplace and also managing my professional studies. [SITUATION] I am confident that I have the discipline to do this. For example whilst studying at college I held a part time job as a _______. [TASK] In the very busy period leading up to my final exams I had to ensure that I could balance both my academic and shift work. [ACTION] I planned out a revision and coursework schedule that fitted around my shifts. Having detailed plan helped me to keep my discipline and stick to my revision timescale. [RESULT] Through planning I was able to ensure that my academic work did not suffer and achieved my target grades.
Question 2: What do you see as the key skills required Quantity Surveyors on a day to day basis?
Aside from being good with figures the key skills for this role is the ability to plan, have a good eye for detail, negotiate and build good relationships with suppliers and other team members. [SITUATION] In all my roles to date I have demonstrated these skills. [TASK] As lead/support quantity surveyor on numerous projects I had responsibility for ensuring delivery to budget [ACTION] By utilising all of these skills in different situation [RESULT] I was able to successfully deliver successfully on all my projects
Question 3: What parts of the Quantity Surveyor role do you most enjoy?
[SITUATION] I am a people person so I enjoy building up relationships with suppliers which in turn allows me to achieve cost reductions. [TASK] I feel this is important because a key role of the job is to drive down cost where possible but also have good professional relationships with reliable suppliers. [ACTION] In my last role I was able to deliver multiple projects using the same supplier because the relationship I had built with them meant that I consistently got good prices and was able to depend on them [RESULT] This meant I had to spend much less time sourcing other suppliers which mean the job could progress quicker.

Set the context of your answer. Tell the panel, where, when and why this situation came to be. For example, “Whilst working in my current role, we were holding an event in which 100 plus people were due to attend any minute. That’s when I was notified the caterers weren’t able to make it.”
What did you have to do. For example, “I had to organise alternative caterers and without the guests knowing. The failure of the event would have been a disaster for the company.”
What did you actually do. For example, “I spoke to the venue owner and we identified other caterers who may be able to help at short notice. I contacted all of them and identified one who could cater the event albeit one hour later than planned.”
How did the situation play out. For example, “Catering was provided in line with guest expectations. The evening, after this initial hiccup, went seamlessly. I was congratulated by the senior managers for sorting out what could have been a catastrophe.”
Constructing your answers in this way will ensure you fully address the question / scenario given and the criteria the panel are measuring you against.
